How to Prepare a Vehicle Surface Before Installing Vinyl Graphics
A clean, dry, stable surface gives adhesive graphics the best chance to lay flat and stay attached.
Surface preparation is one of the least visible parts of a decal installation, but it has a major effect on the finished result. Wash away loose dirt first so you are not rubbing grit across the paint during final cleaning. Pay special attention to lower body panels and rear areas where road film accumulates.
After washing, remove wax, polish residue, silicone-based detailing products, grease, and fingerprints from the actual application zone. Use only cleaners that are appropriate for the specific surface and finish. A product that is acceptable on plain glass may not be appropriate for window tint, plastic trim, fresh paint, or specialty finishes.
Let the surface dry completely, including seams where water can hide and run out later. Avoid installing on a panel that is extremely hot from direct sun or very cold if the product instructions call for a more moderate application temperature.
Do a final visual and fingertip inspection before peeling the backing. Small particles, lint, wax streaks, or moisture can show through the graphic or create local lifting. Once the area is clean, avoid touching it unnecessarily with bare fingers.
